One of the most common questions about pimple patches is how long to keep them on. The short answer: several hours or overnight is typical, and you change the patch when it has turned white or starts to lift.
A typical wear time
Most people wear a hydrocolloid patch for around 6 to 8 hours, or overnight while they sleep. Overnight is popular because the patch can work undisturbed, and you're not tempted to touch the spot. Thin patches can also be worn during the day, under or alongside make-up.
Why does the patch turn white?
Hydrocolloid absorbs fluid and swells slightly, which makes the centre of the patch look white or cloudy. This is normal and shows the patch is absorbing. When the whole centre has gone white, it's usually time to change it.
When to change it
- The patch has turned fully white or cloudy.
- The edges are lifting or it no longer seals.
- It has been on overnight and you're starting your morning routine.
- It got wet or dirty, for example after exercise.
Cleanse and dry the skin, then apply a fresh patch if the spot is still active. Never reuse a patch.
Can you leave it on too long?
Patches are designed to be worn for hours at a time, but keeping a single patch on for days isn't a good idea. Change it at least once a day so the skin stays clean. If the skin underneath looks irritated, take a break.
How many days will it take?
Every spot is different. Some people see a difference after one night, while others use a new patch each day for a few days. If a spot is deep, very painful, or doesn't improve, ask a pharmacist or doctor for advice.
Tip: Remove patches slowly after washing your face. Slightly damp skin lets the patch release more gently.
